Above the Cadillac Studio is located on a family farm in scenic Shelbyville Ky. Johnny founded the studio in 1996. What started as a project studio for his own musical endeavors soon became the home base for My Morning Jacket. While there are proper live rooms, iso booths and control room, the signature sound relies on the various outbuildings situated near the studio. Barns, silo’s, grain bin’s, concrete buildings, a glass house and a hay loft the size of a basketball court play an important role in capturing the organic “open air” sounds that are found on many of the recordings made there. The heart of the studio consists of tape machines and other analog equipment, however computers have been introduced recently to accommodate time and distances.
